Bar Associations
Bar associations are organizations of lawyers and judges. Most bar
associations are organized geographically, although some are based on
ethnicity, area of practice, or other common interests. Many bar associations
evaluate judicial candidates based on a variety of criteria. Bar evaluations
are not endorsements; bar groups can find more than one candidate qualified
for the position, or they may conclude that no candidate for a particular
seat is qualified. Some bars have been accused of using evaluations
to express political opinions, while others have adopted rigorous non-partisan
processes; regardless, bar evaluations can offer a useful tool for reviewing
candidates, especially in the context of a broad variety of information.
Where a bar association posts evaluations on their website, we have
tried to list that site separately; if you know of bar evaluations on
line that are not listed here, please let us know.
